Wood-fired hot tubs. A private sauna at the cottage. Ice barrel. Fire pit. And books books books.
Bothan Jura Retreat sits in the crofting township of Knockrome, above the beach at Corran Sands on Jura, four miles north of the island’s main village of Craighouse. Jura is one of the Inner Hebrides, lying about eight miles off the west coast of Scotland, and has just one single-track road. We have four places to stay, each sleeping two: Mrs Leonard’s Cottage; the Black Hut, a timber cabin; the Rusty Hut, a corten-steel lodge; and the Shepherd’s Hut, for off-grid glamping. The cottage, the cabin and the lodge each have their own wood-fired hot tub. The cottage also has a private electric sauna, while our wild sauna is parked down at the beach, five minutes’ walk away, for fresh dips in the sea or river in between saunas. The ice barrel is on site at the shed, chilled to 3°C. From Glasgow it is about six hours by road with two ferries — Kennacraig to Port Askaig on Islay, then Port Askaig to Feolin on Jura. In summer the Jura Passenger Ferry from Tayvallich on the mainland reaches Craighouse directly in fifty minutes and takes no car, but does allow bicycles and dogs. Tayvallich is two hours forty from Glasgow by road, or reachable by bus to Lochgilphead and a local bus on from there — most buses connect with the ferries. Passengers leave the car at Tayvallich; we collect you from Craighouse, or you can hire bikes and they will be waiting there for you. The Shepherd’s Hut is off-grid: no kitchen, no bathroom of its own, and the shower and toilet are in the Bothan shed. The cottage, cabin and lodge all have their own bathrooms and kitchens. All are dog friendly and have access to open space and gardens.
